They were one surface until they were not. Fire moved in that instant the way fire moves: it chose, tore, bloomed, and did not return. When the faces came apart, the yellow heart split. Tile A kept the denser yolk, cracked into polygons, still almost whole. Tile B kept the light after it — cream in the cracks, a flame of red leaping up where the circle broke.

Around both sisters the red set into cells, a cracked lake bed still holding warmth. The small island adrift on one is the cousin of the flame on the other. At the foot of Tile A, orange mixed with white and ran, a slow spill the separation did not take back. The relief is that leaving: ridges, basins, dry riverbeds on ceramic bisque that stays kiln grey.

Standing between them is standing at the exact width of the pull. The sisters were never two things. One heat. Then two afterglows. Then this.

They came apart
the way fire leaves a room.
One sister kept the denser heart,
yellow cracked into polygons,
a small red island still adrift.
The other took the light in the cracks
and the flame that broke the circle.
Around both, a dry lake of cells
still holding warmth.
Orange ran at the foot and mixed with white.
The relief is that leaving:
ridges, basins, riverbeds
cut in one instant, then still.
Two faces that were one,
standing the width of the pull
and no closer.
