It is shaped like a heart because that is what the clay kept. Not a picture of one — the thing itself, left when two sister tiles that had been a single surface were drawn apart. What stayed is a low relief: a pale chamber opening in both faces, gold lying in the folds, scarlet cracked into cells that have not cooled.

Tile B stands. Taller, almost the shape of the thing itself. She kept the weather of that instant — cobalt as a tide along the base, a blue cap at the crown, spray breaking on the right, as if the heart had just been lifted. Tile A reclines. A wide, low body of the same heart, torn onto bone and blush, lagoons quiet on either shore, a scatter of blue fallen south. She kept the light after it. The chamber is the same opening.

They match no one else. Around both, the old Spanish bisque remains white and finished, a wall that held only this. Neither face is the whole. The sisters are the heart. They were separated once.

It is shaped like a heart
because that is what stayed.

Not drawn.
Left in the clay
when the two faces came apart.

A pale chamber opened in both —
ivory marrow, torn rose —
gold in the folds
where the scarlet cracked.

Tile B stands in the weather:
tide at her feet,
blue at the crown,
spray leaving the right.

Tile A reclines in the hush after —
lagoons on either shore,
a scatter of drops to the south.

Neither face is the whole.
The sisters are the heart.
They were separated once.
